In a significant relief for West Bengal government employees, the Supreme Court on Friday directed the state to pay 25 percent dearness allowance (DA) as an interim measure. The apex court gave the government four weeks to comply with the order.
A bench comprising Justices Sanjay Karol and Manoj Mishra passed the directive, stressing that the order must be followed within the given timeframe. The case will now come up for the next hearing in August, where further deliberations on full DA arrears and implementation may be discussed.
The ruling comes amid long-standing protests and legal battles over DA payments in West Bengal. Employees have claimed that they are being unfairly denied DA, which is regularly revised and disbursed by other states and the central government. This judgment is seen as partial victory for their cause.
Speaking after the order, a protestor from Sangrami Jamuti Manch, one of the leading organizations fighting for DA, expressed satisfaction: “We have received recognition that our demand was justified. The Supreme Court has validated the High Court’s view, and that brings us relief.”
